The Story Behind Significant Journey Bags
Significant Journey bags are made of high quality Ultrasuede® and microsuede polyester or durable canvas with intricate embroidery and some with appliqué. Kathy Lengyel is the designer who made Significant Journey bags transcend beyond a product used to carry a woman’s possessions into something with more significant meaning. The mission of Significant Journey was to design a USA made exceptional embroidered bag that carries a symbolic message to the owner while benefiting other people in society. When Kathy begins the concept design of a bag she looks at world issues or lifestyles. She finds an encouraging word to name the style and then searches for a need (cause) that fulfills that style.
Kathy first made her bags for her own personal enjoyment. Then women started to stop her and inquire where she bought her bag. The constant query is what made her decide to pursue making handbags for women. All Significant Journey bags are made in America; each bag contains top quality embroidery with over 60,000 stitches. The design process starts with a pencil sketch by Kathy Lengyel. The sketch is scanned into the computer and re-drawn on the computer in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Kathy creates an illustration with all detail and color scheme finalized. The artwork is then taken into an embroidery software program and is digitized for embroidery stitches. Every type of stitch is chosen with precise artistic style to achieve the right look that matches the illustration. This design process alone can consume many hours. The design is then taken to the embroidery machine where thread colors are closely matched to the illustration and the design is embroidered on multiple layers of stabilizer, batting and material. It requires several test sew outs until the right amount of stitch density is achieved. The materials are individually hand cut with scissors and then sent to the embroidery machine where the embroidery takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours to complete. The embroidered pieces are machine sewn together to make the bag. Significant Journey tote bags are limited editions. Each tote bag is signed by Kathy Lengyel.
